The deviation of the nasal septum can make breathing difficult and affect the quality of life. Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects the septum, improves breathing function, and, if necessary, the appearance of the nose. Our clinic offers a professional approach and a safe procedure with quicker recovery and long-term results.
Nose deviation surgery
Deviation of the nasal septum is a common anatomical disorder that affects a large number of people, many of whom are not even aware of it. Although it may go unnoticed, in many cases it significantly affects the quality of life – interfering with normal breathing, causing chronic sinus infections, headaches and even sleep disturbances. If not recognized and treated, this seemingly "minor nuisance" can lead to more serious complications.
At our clinic, we provide modern diagnostic and treatment methods, including surgical procedures that bring long-term relief. You can learn more about this condition, its causes, symptoms, and treatment options below.
What is nasal septal deviation?
The nasal septum is the partition that separates the left and right nostrils. When it is moved to the side - which we call a deviation - a partial or complete blockage of one side of the nose occurs, which makes breathing significantly more difficult. The deviation can be congenital or the result of injuries (eg during sports activities, traffic accidents or in childhood). Often, people are not even aware that they have this disorder until symptoms appear.
Typical symptoms of nasal deviation
A deviated nasal septum can cause a range of symptoms that are often overlooked or mistaken for other health problems. Although in some people the symptoms appear in a milder form, in others they can significantly impair daily functioning and quality of life.
1. Difficulty breathing through the nose, especially on one side: One of the most common signs of deviation is a feeling of stuffiness or difficulty breathing through one nostril. This happens because the curved septum blocks the passage of air, especially at rest or during sleep, when the need for oxygen is greater. This condition often leads to mouth breathing, which further aggravates the problem.
2. Frequent sinus infections: A deformed nasal septum can interfere with normal sinus ventilation and drainage, which favors the development of bacterial infections. The result is frequent inflammation, pain in the face, a feeling of pressure in the head and sometimes loss of the sense of smell.
3. Constant runny nose and frequent colds: Irritation of the mucous membrane due to difficulty breathing leads to increased secretion of secretions. People with deviation often have symptoms similar to chronic rhinitis - constant runny nose, frequent colds and congestion, which do not go away easily even with therapy.
4. Headaches and feeling of pressure: Due to disturbed air circulation and pressure in the sinuses, frequent headaches can occur - especially in the forehead area, around the eyes or nose. These headaches can be persistent and worsen during weather changes or allergic reactions.
5. Snoring and sleep problems (apnea): People with a deviated septum often suffer from snoring, precisely because of the difficulty in the flow of air through the nose. In more serious cases, there is also apnea - interruption of breathing during sleep - which significantly impairs the quality of rest and can have serious consequences for health.
If you notice more of these symptoms, it is recommended to see an ENT specialist who can determine the degree of deviation and suggest appropriate treatment.
When is surgery the right solution?
In cases where conservative methods (eg sprays, drugs, inhalations) do not bring relief, surgical correction of the septum - septoplasty - is recommended. This procedure not only improves breathing, but also affects the quality of sleep, reduces infections and eliminates chronic congestion.
In patients who, in addition to functional problems, also want aesthetic corrections, rhinoplasty is often performed at the same time, which solves both the aesthetic and health aspects of the problem.
How is nose deviation surgery performed?
Nasal septum deviation surgery, known as septoplasty, is a surgical procedure that corrects the curvature of the nasal septum - the thin septum that separates the left and right nostrils. The goal of the operation is to establish a proper flow of air through the nasal passages, thereby solving numerous health problems associated with difficulty breathing.
What does the procedure itself look like?
Septoplasty is most often performed under general anesthesia, but in certain cases it can also be performed with local anesthesia, depending on the patient's condition and the complexity of the deviation.
During the operation:
- The surgeon makes an incision inside the nasal cavity, so there are no external scars.
- Curved pieces of cartilage and/or bone that cause nasal congestion are removed or reshaped.
- In case of more severe deformities, it may be necessary to place temporary silicone splints to stabilize the septum during healing.
- In rare cases, if there are additional irregularities, the operation can be combined with other interventions, such as turbinoplasty (reduction of the nasal shells) or rhinoplasty (aesthetic correction of the nose).
The entire procedure usually lasts between 60 and 120 minutes and is performed under sterile conditions, under the constant supervision of the medical team.
Benefits of Septal Deviation Surgery
Septoplasty offers numerous benefits that enhance both functionality and overall health. Here are the key advantages:
1. Normalization of Breathing: A primary reason for this surgery is to improve nasal breathing. Patients who previously relied on mouth breathing can now utilize both nasal passages, significantly enhancing their daily quality of life.
2. Reduction of Frequent Sinus Infections: With a corrected septum, airflow and natural sinus drainage improve, leading to a reduced risk of inflammation and chronic sinusitis.
3. Improved Sleep Quality: Nasal congestion at night often leads to snoring, restless sleep, or sleep apnea. After the surgery, most patients report more restful sleep with fewer awakenings and a feeling of refreshment in the morning.
4. Enhanced Sports Performance and Physical Endurance: For those engaged in sports or physical activities, better nasal breathing increases lung capacity and allows for more efficient oxygen intake during exercise.
5. Reduced Need for Medications: Many patients find they no longer require regular use of decongestant sprays, antihistamines, or antibiotics following surgery.
Recovery Process After Surgery
Recovery from septoplasty varies by individual but is generally mild and quick, especially when patients adhere to postoperative instructions.
- First Few Days: Patients may experience swelling, mild pain, and nasal congestion due to packing or swelling. Breathing gradually improves as the nose heals.
- First Week: Nasal packing (if used) and/or silicone splints are typically removed within 5 to 7 days, providing immediate relief in breathing.
- Two to Three Weeks: Most patients resume normal activities during this time; however, it's advisable to avoid exercise, bending over, and heavy lifting.
- Full Stabilization of Nasal Function: This occurs within one to three months post-surgery when the mucous membrane is fully regenerated.
Recommended Recovery Measures
- Avoid strenuous physical activities in the first few weeks.
- Sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling.
- Refrain from blowing your nose for the first few days.
- Use isotonic nasal sprays and medications as instructed by your doctor.
- Attend scheduled check-ups to monitor healing.
Our team supports you throughout the recovery process, providing detailed instructions, conducting post-operative examinations, and offering professional assistance for any questions or concerns.
