Imagine finally being able to breathe fully, without constant nasal congestion. For many, a deviated septum is not just a minor inconvenience – it can make everyday life difficult, causing headaches, fatigue, and sleeplessness, and affecting overall health and well-being.
Surgery for a Deviated Nasal Septum
Breathing problems are among the most common reasons people seek medical help. While some issues may be temporary, caused by a cold or allergies, long-term difficulty breathing—especially through the nose—can indicate a more serious structural problem. One of the most common causes of persistent breathing difficulties is a deviated septum. This condition can significantly affect quality of life, but effective treatments exist, including surgery, which can permanently resolve these issues.
What is a Deviated Septum?
The nasal septum is the structure that divides the nasal cavity into two sides, allowing air to flow freely through both nostrils. In people with a deviated septum, the septum is not properly aligned and is shifted from its natural position. This can lead to difficulty breathing, frequent sinus infections, and even sleep problems such as apnea.
A deviated septum can be congenital, present at birth, or acquired, as a result of nasal injury, for example, a blow during sports or traffic accidents. If the deviation is not recognized or treated, symptoms may worsen over time. Some people do not notice breathing problems until later in life, while others experience symptoms immediately.
How Does a Deviated Septum Affect Breathing?
When the septum is not properly aligned, airflow through the nose is obstructed. The body must work harder to get enough air, which can lead to various symptoms. In addition to difficulty breathing, people with a deviated septum may notice:
-
Persistent or recurring nasal congestion
-
Increased nasal discharge (mucus)
-
Dry cough or throat irritation due to constant mouth breathing
-
Frequent sinus infections due to poor nasal ventilation
For many, these symptoms become noticeable during puberty or later in life, although they can appear earlier. Without timely diagnosis and treatment, symptoms can significantly reduce the quality of life. Septoplasty remains the most effective solution.
When is Surgery Necessary?
Surgery to correct a deviated septum, known as septoplasty, is the only permanent treatment. Medications and other therapies may temporarily relieve symptoms, but they do not address the underlying problem.
Septoplasty is generally not recommended before the age of 18, as the nose continues to grow and develop during adolescence. However, in cases of severe deviation with unbearable breathing difficulties, surgery can be performed at a younger age.
Once nasal growth is complete, surgery is safe and effective. The procedure involves correcting the septum and restoring it to its natural position, normalizing airflow. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and patients can typically return to their daily activities within a few days.
Preparing for Surgery
Before septoplasty, patients undergo several preoperative examinations:
-
Consultation with an internist
-
EKG and laboratory tests
-
Nasal and throat swabs
-
Chest X-ray
These tests help determine whether there are any contraindications for surgery or anesthesia. Results must be recent (no older than 7 days), and if not conducted at the surgical facility, they should be provided for review.
Postoperative Recovery
Recovery after septoplasty usually takes about two weeks. During the first 24–48 hours, patients remain in the hospital, and nasal packing is placed to help keep the nose open and allow partial breathing. The packing is removed after a few days, and patients can gradually resume normal activities, avoiding strenuous physical effort.
Mild nasal swelling is normal after surgery, bruising is uncommon, and major breathing problems usually disappear once the packing is removed. Absence from work or school for 10–14 days is recommended to ensure full recovery.
