Having trouble breathing or frequent sinus infections? It may be a deviation of the nasal septum.
The nasal septum is a thin partition that separates the right and left nasal cavities. When this septum is displaced or distorted – a condition known as a deviation – it can lead to difficulty breathing, chronic nasal congestion, and even frequent sinus infections.
Septoplasty
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct a deviated nasal septum, which is the structure that separates the left and right sides of the nasal cavity. When the septum is misaligned, it can obstruct the airway, leading to difficulties in breathing, frequent sinus infections, chronic nasal congestion, and sleep disturbances. As a result, many patients choose this procedure to enhance their overall quality of life.
When is septoplasty recommended?
While septoplasty primarily serves a functional purpose, it can also provide aesthetic benefits. Some patients opt to combine septoplasty with rhinoplasty, allowing for improvements in both breathing and the appearance of the nose.
Septoplasty is recommended when a deviated nasal septum causes significant problems that affect daily functioning. The following are common symptoms indicating the need for this procedure:
- Persistent or occasional difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils.
- Frequent sinus infections due to poor drainage and blocked nasal passages.
- Snoring and breathing problems during sleep, including potential episodes of apnea.
- Pressure or pain in the nose or sinuses, as well as headaches that cannot be attributed to othermedical conditions.
- Deformities of the nose that cause both aesthetic concerns and functional disturbances.
In cases of severe deviation that make breathing difficult and negatively impact quality of life, septoplasty can provide significant relief and improve the patient’s overall health.
How is Septoplasty Performed?
Septoplasty is typically conducted under general anesthesia, although in some cases, it may be performed with local anesthesia depending on the complexity of the procedure and the patient’s preferences. During the surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision inside the nasal cavity, which prevents a visible scar on the outside of the nose. This incision allows access to the deformed septum for correction.
The surgeon carefully removes or reshapes the cartilage and bone that obstruct normal airflow. If necessary, internal sutures or silicone stents may be used to keep the septum in the correct position while it heals. The entire procedure takes between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the severity of the case.
Postoperative Recovery
Recovery after septoplasty is generally quick and uncomplicated. In the first few days, it is essential to avoid physical exertion, bending over, and blowing your nose to minimize the risk of bleeding and to promote healing. Some slight swelling, nasal congestion, and discomfort are common during the early recovery period.
If nasal tampons are used, they are usually removed within a few days. Over the next few weeks, the swelling will gradually decrease, and breathing will improve. Full recovery and stabilization of nasal function typically occur within 4 to 6 weeks, after which patients can generally return to their normal activities.
Advantages of septoplasty
Septoplasty brings numerous benefits, both functionally and aesthetically. Some of the most significant advantages of this procedure are:
- Easier breathing: After surgery, patients often feel a significant improvement in breathing, which affects general health, better oxygenation of the body and more energy during the day.
- Fewer sinus infections: Correcting the septum allows for better air flow and more efficient drainage of the sinuses, thus reducing the frequency of inflammation and infections.
- Better sleep: Many patients report a reduction in snoring and sleep apnea, leading to more restful and deeper sleep.
- Aesthetic improvement: When septoplasty is combined with rhinoplasty, it is possible to simultaneously solve functional problems and improve the appearance of the nose, achieving a natural and proportional appearance that fits the facial features.
How much does septoplasty cost?
The price of septoplasty varies depending on several factors - the reputation of the clinic, the experience of the surgeon, the complexity of the procedure and the type of anesthesia. In Serbia, the average price of this operation is between €1,500 and €3,500, where in most cases all costs are included: consultation, preparation, operation and post-operative treatment.
If the patient decides to perform aesthetic correction of the nose (rhinoplasty) along with septoplasty, the total price may be higher, because the procedure becomes more complex and time-consuming.
At Royal Plastic Surgery, septoplasty is performed at a competitive price of €2,300, which includes a complete service - from the initial consultation, through the operation, to post-operative care and controls. For patients who want aesthetic corrections as part of the same procedure, the price is formed individually, depending on the scope of the intervention.
